Eligibility Criteria

All patients will be screened using the eligibility criteria detailed below:

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patient is aged 16 years and above

  • Patient has symptomatic BTOA

  • Patients who the clinician considers would benefit from surgical intervention 

  • Patient is suitable for either surgical intervention (e.g. does not have a flat trapezium or severe subluxation of metacarpal) 

  • Patient is able to consent for a surgical procedure

Exclusion
Criteria:

  • Patient has inflammatory arthritis (likely to have soft tissue +/- bony problems which may preclude either or both surgical interventions)

  • Patient has or has had infection around the base of the thumb 

  • Patient has had previous surgery on the affected carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ)

  • Patient has any comorbidity which precludes them from undergoing surgical intervention
